The dramatic red dunes of Sossusvlei

The dramatic red dunes of Sossusvlei are one of the defining images of Namibia, characterising adventures here. These are some of the highest dunes in the world, towering up to over 1000 feet above the surrounding plains at Sossusvlei itself; a stunning and endlessly photogenic landscape. A trip to the deserts of Sossusvlei imprints upon the mind's eye, a vast and impressive landscape to explore on foot, by 4x4 or from the vantage point of a hot air balloon.

Sossusvlei Wildlife

Safaris into these rugged deserts are tend to focus more on immersing yourself in stunning physical scenery than wildlife viewing, but antelope such as Gemsbok (Oryx) and Springbok have adapted to the harsh conditions and are quite often seen making their way up the arid dunes. Cape Fox, Jackal, Bat-eared Foxes and Aardwolf are also likely encounters and wonderful moringa and quiver trees complete the spectacle.

Sossusvlei Activities

Visitors to Sossusvlei tend to spend their time here either taking nature walks or drives over the dunes, usually scheduled for the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the heat of the sun. Activities centre round early morning excursions in 4x4 vehicles to the magnificent Sossusvlei dunes and the "vlei" itself. Wonderful desert breakfasts are served under camel-thorn acacias surrounded by the dunes.

The desert sky provides superb stargazing, and a number of lodges have private plunge pools from which to watch the constellations rise.

A number of camps provide options to book a hot air balloon trip over the dunes, a magnificent and memorable way to see the sunrise over the red sands before you leave.
